Johnny Appleseed had every entrepreneur’s dream of little to no overhead costs. His seeds were free from the cider mills. He paid no rent or mortgage because he slept on the ground in the great outdoors. He had no tools, but a stick to poke holes to place the apple seeds. Anyone who has tried to grow something from seed knows it is hard work to prepare unbroken ground for seed. Without metal tools, which he is documented as not carrying with him, he was forced to improvise.

I marvel that John Chapman, aka, Johnny Appleseed, who was essentially a lone wolf, survived on the Ohio frontier. The Ohio frontier of the early to mid 1800s was predominantly loaded with individuals and groups with a variety of goals. These goals more often than not were enforced, or backed up with violence.
